Late onset storms [Jun. 5th, 2008|12:04 am]
NoVa had a real tornado watch today. Apparently some kids in Tyler's class lost it. He took the time to calm them down. It couldn't just be that easy though, as the predicted nightmares hit hard. Perhaps this delayed reaction will be typical for him. Not for Robin though, she's all heart, all sleeves, all the time. Neat to see the contrast.

(no subject) [Apr. 10th, 2008|09:12 pm]
I can't beat Tyler in chess right now... guns ablaze doesn't cut it anymore. He just soaks up the losses, promotes a pawn, and induces misery tout de suite.

However, so far I can still skewer his best lies. Got a real whopper the other day... Robin came out of the room with one eye clenched; she's really tough so something happened. Wellll, the story went that Tyler accidentally flung a towel and hit her in the eye.

"What does fling mean?" I asked.

"Throw something out of your hand," he said.

"What did I take out of your hand?"

"A washcloth... THERE WERE TWO!!!"

Well, rats. [Jan. 1st, 2008|10:48 pm]
No backup. Power spikes. A good backup overwritten with a bad one. Pictures and songs gone. Did I mention how I kept trying to repair the directory structure?

Rats. Apple Hardware Test spit out some nasty errors about the drive. So... I found a 500GB external USB2 drive for $120 and Data Rescue II imaged the ailing drive successfully... except for those helpful file names and directory names.

Happily Apple's m4a and m4p file extensions, plus embedded metadata, brought the songs back quickly. However, the family pictures are now needles in a 30k stack of JPGs.

Data Rescue embedded the picture dimensions in the file name. So, I wrote a Groovy script to parse and store the dimensions into a database (mysql -- postgresql hard except via Fink). I know our old 3 megapixel camera generated images of a certain size. The new 7 megapixel camera would have consistently generated larger pictures. And pictures outside of those ranges were all straw. Just a little straw probably inside the camera ranges, and iPhoto would weed those out easily.

Happily I had written a histogram package for mysql and put it to use. But what to look at?

Annabelle [Oct. 31st, 2007|09:42 pm]

Annabelle is very stubborn. And very strong. And quite the puppy. And these are all together difficult. I'm looking forwards to months of challenges followed by years of rewards.

Lead dipped Mattel toys [Oct. 20th, 2007|12:20 am]
We collected and bagged several toys dripping with lead paint from China. Fantastic. Michelle sent something to Mattel some time ago and no word yet. I guess we could... throw them away and put them closer to the groundwater supplies??

This year, video games *please*.

Sara rocked OCS [Aug. 11th, 2007|11:26 pm]
[Current Mood |SO proud]

No lj-cut here, I'm too proud :) Sara graduated (Marine) Officer Candidate School as the

female candidate!

The new Marine museum outside Quantico is really well done. Sure enough, one of the quotes carved into the main room is "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?" obwiki. The kids didn't spot it... kinda glad I didn't have to explain the female dog / mother accusation.

DHMO; butternut squash crumble [Jul. 15th, 2007|08:37 pm]
[Tags|, ]

DHMO: Tyler just took a bath and complained of noise in the ears after shaking his head. I said, yes, that's dihydrogen monoxide. So we looked at the website. He got very concerned at all the scary things DHMO does. Really concerned. And when I showed him the wikipedia entry he got very amused and shouldn't fall for that again. :)

Oh... the butternut squash crumble, or the tragedy of a stubborn young child and a despised entree. This really deserves a journal entry. Robin hates squash. A lot.
It"s sort of like distaste = sum(dislike of other ingredients) ** squash, where squash is really big.Collapse )

I'm exhausted [Jun. 22nd, 2007|09:04 pm]
[Current Mood |tiredtired]
[Current Music |Pachabel's Canon]

Parenting is hard. I can't imagine what the teenage years will be like. Even now Tyler's understanding of my flaws is uncomfortable. Give him another 5.5 years of study time, and my flaws will probably be incessantly leveraged against me.

Hopefully by then I'll be thicker skinned. These days I try to offer up my flaws and how goes the process of struggling with them. That sure gets some attention. Sure, sometimes it gets thrown back in my face. Sometimes deservedly. I wish I could be the example I should be. I think awareness and forgiveness for other people's bad decisions is growing slowly. Could just be false optimism though.

Robin's speech has come so far so fast. It's stunning. Michelle pounded the pavement and got her in an awesome program -- the value can't be overestimated. Ballet is a good fit for her muscles, flexibility, and pursuit of everything pink.

Michelle is struggling. I think this is a transition period. Maybe not. Maybe it's trying to add a personal focus while maintaining the moving target of household management. Eegads. She's dedicated most of her young adulthood to holding things together. I try hard to support her, but that's what stones on the side need to do for the keystone.
